Venue change NZ Senior Nationals

It is with regret that we must cancel arrangements to hold the Senior Nationals in Christchurch from October 12th to 16th. Members of the Canterbury table tennis community have many important things to deal with on a personal level, and are not helped by the uncertainty regarding preparations for this event. We must support them by relieving them of both this burden and the potentially tough choices lying ahead.

We also acknowledge that the rest of our administrators, players and their families may also be forced to make tough decisions if we do not take action promptly.

We have been investigating options for staging the event at another venue in the same time-frame. This requires assembly of an experienced tournament management team at very short notice, and an economically viable package to present and attract strong support. Unfortunately, there is no compelling option due to the timing of the event falling between the Quarter-finals and Semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup. Gillies Avenue is a leading contender, but the RWC greatly constricts the availability of affordable accommodation, and influences flight availability and traffic congestion. Other Auckland venues are affected to a lesser degree.

There is a possibility that the event is postponed, quite possibly with a condensed timetable. But, the concern here is that postponement into November will interfere with examinations for many of our prospective entrants. Movement into January may be a possibility.

Associations are being canvassed for viable proposals and feedback on what they can support. TTNZ will endeavour to assist with funding applications for travel costs arising from a decision. We are hopeful of promoting this decision by late June.
