For a country like Australia, any victory is one worth celebrating when it comes to Olympic table tennis.

While Australia has never come close to a medal in the sport, China has won 24 of the 28 gold medals awarded since table tennis entered the Olympics in 1988.

For the first time, each national team at the London Games was restricted to fielding just two players in the singles events instead of three, so that at least the bronze remained up for grabs.

But China still swept all four gold, prompting the head of the International Table Tennis Federation to call on China to open up their state-run sports schools to non-Chinese in a bid to bolster competition.

Mercifully, Australia was spared a match up against the Chinese legends, but they still faced some formidable foes.
