30 teams took part in this years NZ schools championships and the matches were hard fought in all grades. 4-3 results were common place in all grades. Open A Grade The open A grade saw 7 teams from the Auckland region join with Palmerston North BHS, the only team to qualify from outside the region, via their grading match win over St Andrews from Christchurch. After a few upsets, it was down to Westlake Boys High School 1 versus Macleans College 1 in one semi final, while Auckland Grammar 1 (AGS) took on Rutherford College in the other semi. Rutherford had scraped into the semis on countback. The AGS team took control early and never relented winning comfortably 4-0 with all 4 matches won in straight games. The other semi was much closer. Victor Ma won a long 5 setter over Prajoal Arisht which proved to be the decisive win and Westlake came out on top 4-2. Jeremy Huo remaining unbeaten. In the final Westlake had just enough energy to out last their opponents in another tight battle 4-2. This time the decisive win was Victor Pollett’s win over Kevin Lin which extended both players fully. Girls Grade The Girls final saw a 5-2 win for Macleans College over Westlake Girls. Grace Huo and Nai Xin Jiang won the vital 5 set doubles match to set up the win. B Grade B grade was won by Macleans 2 who beat St Andrews 1 in the final while C grade was won by Pakuranga College 2 who beat Edgewater College I the final.
